1. "On July 12, 1749, Dr. Thomas Walker, John Lewis and 45 others, afterwards styled the
Loyal Company, procured from the Council of Virginia permission 'to take up and survey 800,000 acres of land, in one or more surveys,
beginning at the North Carolina line and running to the westward and to the north so as to include the quantity.' They were allowed 4 years
to make their surveys. but not having made any surveys within the time, they secured from the Council on June 14, 1753, four years further
time to complete the surveying and seating of their grant of 800,000 acres, now described as 'lying in the branches of the Mississippi, in
the County of Augusta.' The company at once proceeded to survey, and did cause to be made about 90 surveys, in the name of John Lewis, agent
for the company, charging settlers 3 pounds for each 100 acres, exclusive of rights, surveyor's and patent fees. These surveys lay chiefly
in the counties of Montgomery, Wythe and Washington. In 1756, however, the French and Indian war broke out, which interrupted the work, and
in 1763 came the King's proclamation prohibiting any grants or settlements on the west of the Alleghanies." Tyler's Quarterly Magazine,

908. "John Hobart April 1, 1897 - April 19, 1963 attended the Normal (now East
Tennessee State University) studying Industrial Arts but continued to help on the farm. On July 24, 1924 he married Sara Pearl Slagle. To
this union were born a son who died in infancy June 7, 1927. A daughter Marcella Elizabeth September 7, 1929. Marcella became the bride of
Terry Epperson, Jr. October 20, 1950 no issue. Terry a native of Washington County, Tennessee served in World War II then going into the
field of Education. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. A professor at Appalachian State
University, Boone, North Carolina for 21 years retiring in 1983, returning to Johnson City where he owned and operated T and E Hardware. He
passed away June 6, 1986. The Thomas Farm (Knob View) is no longer in operation however the barn built in 1898 still stands and is being
used for horses. When horses were the main source of cultivation, Isaac kept a number of horses and mules. On July 9, 1924 he purchased a
tractor from Imperial Motor Company in Johnson City for $450.00 yet he preferred his team over the noisy motor. The Thomas home built in
1915 remains on part of the farm where John's widow and daughter live.

write, more often I am so tired it would be a sin to take a chance on what I could write. I am very sorry about Clifford. I never knew he
was sick. It was a shock when Alice called and said he was dead. I still can't always realize that Earl is gone. I was on night duty when
Clifford died, trying to sleep days. Driving myself into the city when I did not know where I was going, already dead tired, and stupid,
with a deadline for getting there was too hazardous to consider. I tried to find a camp driver, and everyone already had commitments, we was
actually in Indianapolis when any search began. Each family circle of our generation is broken; I don't know how you feel, but being the
oldest now living in ours makes me understand that I have been around a long time. In your family the first, third, and seventh. In Uncle
Frank's the third and eighth; ours, the second, third and fourth. I do not know how many Aunt Minnie Kidwell had, but I understand Grace,
next to the last is the only one living. As for Henry's I know nothing at all. Charles and Norma are awaiting their eighth this month. I
hope it comes soon. I always have NERVES while one is coming, and the closer it gets the worse I get. If everything is not over and all well
by the 22nd my summer will be ruined. Evelyn and Ken have decided to stay in Denver another year. Ken was offered a position at Cal. State
but went back on the faculty at Golden College of Mines instead. In February Ralph made two inch headlines in papers all over Michigan by
being made head of the planning department with a title as long as your arm at Kennedy. Even my Battle Creek alumni news letter picked it up
and gave him several inches. Alice and Alvie called yesterday afternoon. Alvie looked well but Alice looked sick. Nadine's condition has me
worried. They tell me John took his family on a three month circle of the globe. I wish I could, but I will never get a chance at that. I
will be in Switzerland, Rome, Ireland and the near east from May 23, till June 27. That is more now than I ever dare hope for or plan
before. Thank you for the invitation to come to your house and go with you to Clifford's funeral. If I had not been working I would have
been grateful to do just that. Am very tired- must sign off and go to bed. Some day you folks must come up here- after I get back- after
