Dear Hazel and Joe,
I have owed you this letter so long I am ashamed to write it now. It is
not always that I do not have time to write, more often I am so tired it would
be a sin to take a chance on what I could write.
I am very sorry about Clifford. I never knew he was sick. It was a shock
when Alice called and said he was dead. I still can't always realize that Earl
is gone. I was on night duty when Clifford died, trying to sleep days.
Driving myself into the city when I did not know where I was going, already
dead tired, and stupid, with a deadline for getting there was too hazardous to
consider. I tried to find a camp driver, and everyone already had commitments,
we was actually in Indianapolis when any search began.
Each family circle of our generation is broken; I don't know how you feel,
but being the oldest now living in ours makes me understand that I have been
around a long time. In your family the first, third, and seventh. In Uncle
Frank's the third and eighth; ours, the second, third and fourth. I do not
know how many Aunt Minnie Kidwell had, but I understand Grace, next to the last
is the only one living. As for Henry's I know nothing at all.
Charles and Norma are awaiting their eighth this month. I hope it comes
soon. I always have NERVES while one is coming, and the closer it gets the
worse I get. If everything is not over and all well by the 22nd my summer will
be ruined.
Evelyn and Ken have decided to stay in Denver another year. Ken was
offered a position at Cal. State but went back on the faculty at Golden College
of Mines instead.
In February Ralph made two inch headlines in papers all over Michigan by
being made head of the planning department with a title as long as your arm at
Kennedy. Even my Battle Creek alumni news letter picked it up and gave him
several inches.
Alice and Alvie called yesterday afternoon. Alvie looked well but Alice
looked sick. Nadine's condition has me worried.
They tell me John took his family on a three month circle of the globe. I
wish I could, but I will never get a chance at that. I will be in Switzerland,
Rome, Ireland and the near east from May 23, till June 27. That is more now
than I ever dare hope for or plan before.
Thank you for the invitation to come to your house and go with you to
Clifford's funeral. If I had not been working I would have been grateful to do
just that.
Am very tired- must sign off and go to bed.
Some day you folks must come up here- after I get back- after July 1.
