As far as I know, I am not related to the Callahans or Henrys. I am helping a friend who descends from Henry Henry who was closely associated with the Callahans from at least 1763 in Augusta, now Rockingham Co., VA. In 1830 Jefferson Co., TN, some of both families were still living close neighbors to one another. First is a post that I made, and below it is a reply:
My Dumplin list post- Here are Callahans and the Henrys with whom they were associated in VA since at least 1763. I think the two families were relatives. They were door-to-door neighbors since 1763 at least. 1830 Jefferson Co. TN, area of Shady Grove, Dumplin Creek, p. 332 >Callin, Henry 2010001-010001 (may or may not be Callahan) > >Henry, Loftus 100001-01001 (born Rockingham Co. VA. Married Susanna Jones, dau of John Jones and Ann(a) Layman. His parents were Hugh Henry and Martha (Patsy) Pullen/Pullin, dau. of Loftus Pullen and Anne Jennie (Jane) Usher of Cowpasture,Bath Co., VA. This Hugh Henry was son of Henry Henry. page 333 >Henry, David 211001-01001 >son of William Henry and Agnes Allison. David was grandson of Henry Henry >who along with the Callahans bought land from William Chesnut on Muddy >Creek, Augusta Co., VA, in 1763, area now Rockingham Co. David Henry was married to Ann Jones, sister to Susanna above. William Chestnut's second wife was a Callahan. The Henrys, Chesnuts, and Callahans lived side by side from at least 1763 until coming to what is now Jefferson Co. TN from 1790s to 1806 moving in time (different members came at different times.) > >Henry, Sarah 00011-00010001001 Sarah (Sallie) Jones Henry, second wife of William Henry above. >Killey (Kelley?), Susan 1-110001 >Callahan, Rachel 00010000001-00000001 (This is the widow of William Callahan. Notice there is a man in the household old enough to be her husband, but she is head of household. I do not know for a fact or source, but I have that she may have been a Van Huser, Hooser, Hozier, etc.) >Thomas, Reuben 00001-00001 >Callahan, Thos. 01001-00001 >Hoozer, Hugh 200001-00011 > >page 334 >Callahan, John 00101-10001 Reply to my post: According to the Joyce Lindstrom book, VanHoose VanHooser Van Huss in the United States, Rachel Callahan was the daughter of John VanHooser/Vanhoozer who (Rachel) was born about 1775 in Fincastle Co., VA. She married William Callahan 5/28/1798 (date of license), and she died in 1860 in Harrison Co., MO. Also, according to the book, John VanHooser, her father, was living "with his widowed daughter" in the 1830 census, with John listed in the 80-90 age bracket. John is living with nephew, Hugh Vanhoozer in 1850. Hugh (Son of Valentine Vanhoozer) married Rebecca Callahan, the daughter of William and Rachel (Vanhoozer) Callahan. John's age is recorded as 115 years. The book also notes the following, which I have heard a variation of through family: " The "Southern Advocate" newspaper in Huntsville, Alabama dated 9/18/1850 states, "John Vanhoozer died near New market, TN on the 1st, aged 122 years." Actually he was only 102 years old...Nor can I account for the exaggeration of his age in the 1850 census of Jefferson County, Tenn." Also, another "link" to the Henry family was found in Billie McNamara's transcription of Miscellaneous Bonds: Administration, Constables, Maintenance (Bastardy), Indentures of Jefferson county, Tennessee. A bond dated 9/15/1830 is for a charge against Isaac Hooser, and secured by Hugh Hooser and John Baker, for Isaac being "Charged with being the reputed father of a base begotten Child a boy of the body of Martha Henry. {Martha was Martha Matilda or Matilda Martha (nickname Matsy) Henry dau. of William Henry and Agnes Allison who were married 1791 in Greene Co. TN. William was the son of Henry Henry of Augusta, later Rockingham Co., VA. Martha Matilda Henry had an illegimate son, Issac Van Hoozer. She then married when she was in her midtwenties in Greene Co. TN to Jordan Temple-DorisParton} My direct line is through John Vanhoozer's son, Valentine Vanhoozer. His son, William Vanhoozer married Lucretia "Cresy" Thomas. And, their son, Sampson Vanhoozer, and his 2nd wife, Martha Ann Riddle, are my GGG-grandparents. William Vanhoozer was in the War of 1812 (4th Reg. (Bayles') East TN Militia. Sampson's son, Isaac Vanhoozer married (1st) Sarah Elizabeth French in Jefferson County in 1887, and their daughter Allie Mahala Vanhoozer married Luthur C. Webster...my G-grandparents. I'm still looking for the burial place for Sarah Elizabeth, who died in childbirth with her second daughter, Lizzie in 1889. I think it has to be Dumplin Cemetery, where Isaac is buried (as is William, Cresy, Sampson and Martha Ann and other Vanhoozers), but have never found the site. Jeanne Rainey Greenshields
