2397. John Hobart Thomas

"John Hobart April 1, 1897 - April 19, 1963 attended the Normal (now East
Tennessee State University) studying Industrial Arts but continued to help on
the farm. On July 24, 1924 he married Sara Pearl Slagle. To this union were
born a son who died in infancy June 7, 1927. A daughter Marcella Elizabeth
September 7, 1929. Marcella became the bride of Terry Epperson, Jr. October 20,
1950 no issue. Terry a native of Washington County, Tennessee served in World
War II then going into the field of Education. He completed a Doctor of
Philosophy degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. A professor at
Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina for 21 years retiring in
1983, returning to Johnson City where he owned and operated T and E Hardware.
He passed away June 6, 1986. The Thomas Farm (Knob View) is no longer in
operation however the barn built in 1898 still stands and is being used for
horses. When horses were the main source of cultivation, Isaac kept a number of
horses and mules. On July 9, 1924 he purchased a tractor from Imperial Motor
Company in Johnson City for $450.00 yet he preferred his team over the noisy
motor. The Thomas home built in 1915 remains on part of the farm where John's
widow and daughter live.
