Member of the Stonewall Division, CSA. Shown in records of Washington County as having been granted a pension by the Act of 1902 for his military service to the Confederacy. Pension requirements were that James must have been indigent and disabled by the War. It is unclear if this is "our" James Thomas as Catherine DuVal Thomas' notes show his date of death as 1885, before this James was granted a pension.
James Madison Thomas enlisted in the Army for one year at Goodson,Virginia on April 20, 1861, with his brother Charles. The Muster Rollshows him as present in August, 1861 and January, 1862. He was woundedin May, 1862, and in the hospital in Staunton, Virginia. After that, he was apparently detailed as a teamster from June, 1862, and was shown onthat detail December 1, 1864. He surrendered on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House and was paroled there.
